WDG Redesigns Australian Swimming’s Information Systems Using Microsoft .NET

Highlights:
New web-based National Swimming Database reduced member renewal processing by up to 3 weeks and increased the rate of registrations by 33 per cent.
WDG helped Australian Swimming Inc. (ASI) reduce development time by 60 per cent using Microsoft.NET – allowing ASI to realise a return on their investment sooner.

Company Background:
Australian Swimming Inc (ASI) is Australia’s peak swimming body, responsible for keeping Australian swimming at the forefront of sport, both locally and on the world stage. As the leading body for the sport, ASI’s core activities include sports administration, policy setting, member communication and sports promotion. The ASI has over 100,000 members Australia-wide.

Business Challenge:
Competitive swimmers who join swim clubs automatically become members of the ASI and the State Swimming Association. As the peak swimming body in Australia, it is ASI’s role to maintain Australia’s position as an elite swimming nation. Providing members and staff with easy to access information such as swim results, swim meet schedules, even uniform sizes of the national swim squad, is essential for the efficient management of ASI and its activities.

However, this breadth of information was previously stored in many different information systems and even in paper-based archives housed at local, State and National levels. This made matching data, exchanging information and even communicating with members, extremely difficult and often inaccurate.

ASI turned to WDG to integrate these systems into a central information repository – a National Swimming Database. The system would be web based and enable all swim clubs around Australia to manage their club’s memberships, renewals, member details, club meet schedules and other swimming information.

The new member database had to be completed, tested and fully operational in time for the next summer season. This meant that the project had to be delivered to an extremely tight six week time frame.

The Solution:
Prior to commencing development on the database, WDG worked closely with ASI and its stakeholders to clearly articulate the user requirements for a National Swimming Database to ensure alignment with ASI’s business objectives.

WDG's expertise in requirements analysis identified additional critical functionality that had not been included in the original specification.

“WDG’s user-centred approach enabled us to identify many new opportunities that would deliver profitable returns for ASI. Their approach was very flexible and clear which helped us push the project through at all levels of the organisation,” says Mr. Saharov, IT Project Manager at Australian Swimming Inc.

The database was built using WDG’s ASP.NET class library which helped fast track development time and reduce development risks. The library consists of a comprehensive suite of tried and tested code, components, controls and web services, which the development team can use rather than start development from scratch.

The Results:
  • ASI was able to realise a return on their investment, sooner. WDG’s clear project delivery methodologies and Microsoft .NET helped reduce development time by 60 per cent.
  • New web-based National Swimming Database reduced member renewal processing by up to 3 weeks and increased the rate of ASI registrations by 33 per cent.
  • Enhanced security and privacy of member’s information.
  • Increased accountability with stakeholders through improved reporting functionality
